Sociology of the Gig Economy

Sociology of the Gig Economy

This course introduces students to the various issues that the gig economy has introduced to the world of work. Throughout the semester, students will examine the various aspects of the gig economy: workers, employers, legislations, and the role of technology. Together as a class, we will produce a public-facing podcast, where students will interview a gig economy employee, an activist, a policy maker, or an academic whose work focuses on the various aspects of the work economy. Furthermore, each student will write a research summary of a research article to be published on the class website. Together, we also produced a one-seasoned podcast titled "Voices of the Gig Economy."

The podcast project has been featured at the 2021 Hunter College Faculty Tech in Teaching Showcase, and "Considering Digital Sociology" presentation at Hunter College - Sociology Department.
